Toronto's Reelworld Film Festival has carved out a space for itself in Toronto's bursting cultural scene with a program with eyes that reach beyond the cinematic medium: to make an impact by tackling social change on a global level. Film, naturally, is still at the centre, but the festival has expanded in its 16 years to include poetry, visual art, virtual reality, and more. And this year, you can add a great day of live music.
Reelworld called us up to collaborate on a music stage for their Social Impact Market and Arts Zone and, hearing the mandate, we knew this had 88 Days of Fortune written all over it. So, on October 15th at 4:30pm at the Harbourfront Centre, Chart Attack will be presenting two of our favourite artists from the queer-friendly, mind-bending music and arts collective.
Witch Prophet will hit us with some of the smooth-as-all-fuck future R&B that made us so excited this year and led to her just-released new EP H.P.B. Then Yasmine will chill the room with some of the woozy-cool hip-hop that's been burning up SoundCloud.
Check it out while you wander through the marketplace, along with music from SKETCH, social innovation vendors, tech demonstrations, film, games, a virtual reality arcade, and more good stuff.
Among the films playing at Reelworld will be Across The Line, the feature debut of Director X, who you might know from "Hotline Bling," ... and most of the best videos, Canadian and otherwise, of the past few decades.
Inspired by the events of the 1989 Cole Harbour District High School race riots, Across The Line follows a black Nova Scotian teenager poised to become an NHLer. As racial tension at school escalates and his brother's criminal life comes closer to home, the young prospect's hockey dreams fall into jeopardy. The festival programme calls it: "equal parts beautiful and unsettling... [shedding] critical light on racism in Canada and the struggle to find one’s identity in a society eager to define."
We've got two pairs of tickets to Reelworld's screening of Across The Line Saturday, October 15 at 4:45pm. The Director himself will be in attendance.
