In a summer marked by an explosion of slick, corporate-sponsored mega-fests in Southern Ontario, one of the most exciting arrivals is also one of the most grassroots affairs. The first ever Strangewaves Music and Art Festival, happening August 21-23 in Rockton, Ontario (a 25-minute drive from downtown Hamilton), promises a wonderful —and yes, weird— weekend with a stacked bill of local and import acts.
Organized by Hamilton artists, musicians, and vet scenesters, the inaugural Strangewaves offers an impressive collection of talent, including Bile Sister, Egyptrixx, Etiquette, Fiver, Jennifer Castle, Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, Jessy Lanza, Lido Pimienta, Phèdre, Shalabi Effect, TV Freaks, and WTCHS. Full schedule here.
Hamilton's favourite sons, TV Freaks, have been given a side stage, aptly titled The Freak Show, booking a dream punk showcase inside of the festival, with performances from Century Palm, The Famines, Strange Attractor, and Mick Futures, to name a few.
There'll be installations by local artists, comedy, and a film program that includes TIFF award winner —and certifiably strange animated flick — Ashphalt Watches.
To get to the Rockton Fairgrounds, organizers have arranged a shuttle leaving from Hamilton. A weekend pass, which will cost you $50 in advance, includes on-site camping.
Shush Inc., the crew behind Strangewaves, has sent us a pair of weekend tickets to get you and a buddy into the shindig gratis. We forecast good times. To win, follow @ChartAttack and retweet this tweet. Good luck!
