Viet Cong's monumental rise might look like the trajectory of an Pitchfork-era buzz band, but their roots stretch deep back into Calgary's DIY scene. As Sled Island engulfs Calgary's music scene this week, we took the opportunity to sit down Matt Flegel and Mike Wallace to talk about the city that bred them.
From Calgary-famous mainstays to bands that should be famous, the band catches us up on who we should be listening to, plus explains how oil money, gentrification and long, cold winters have affected the music scene. Then they reflect on their tumultuous days in the all-ages punk scene, talk about their most memorable shows, touch on their own influence (through now-defunct, endlessly-influential bands like Women) and labels that have kept the scene together like glue.
Viet Cong plays the marquee Olympic Plaza stage this Saturday, June 27, alongside an all-star lineup that includes Television, Drive Like Jehu, King Tuff and Ex Hex. And as luck would have it, we have tickets to give away. Enter here.
