| BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: |
| This Toronto quartet have been touring Canada for over five years and have become popular across the pond, but they are just starting to get recognition, recently wrapping up recording for their second album. |
| Comment: People at this show flew like flies to a light for The Dunes, who sent energy shockwaves right back with power chords up to high heaven. The guys were theatrical and eager. Every member looked like they'd emerged from a different genre. This was especially the case with the bassist, who seemed to be going for some sort of indie Gene Simmons look. Nevertheless, they came together to present. |

There wasn’t much verbal exchange between band and crowd, but I think everyone was too mesmerized to notice. The set started off with power and had the potential to fall short, but it didn’t. The guys brought the notch up higher, especially when frontman Kevin Pullen, little man that he is, took up the entire stage with kicks, jumps, and some spastic guitar playing.

The bass and drums were too loud and drowned out Pullen’s vocals to an extent, but the band pulled through. With classic-honed rock songs, they sounded like a combination of the catchy zing of Franz Ferdinand and the pumping beats of Modest Mouse. |

Pullen’s showmanship was obvious as he passionately grabbed the microphone and proceeded to place his hand on his heart, singing breathy and desperate lyrics. I also commend the band for providing non-stop energy through a late set at a lazy venue.
