| BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: |
| "Citygrass and a can of whoop-ass" would be an accurate description of a United Steel Workers Of Montreal performance. They're on the verge of finding a middle ground between punk and country, and they're doing it all without a drummer. |
| Comment:The United Steel Workers Of Montreal are a lesson in oxymorons. Burly singer Gern F. plays a tiny acoustic guitar. The upright bassist, Eddy Blake, is a wee man sporting a huge instrument. Singer Felicity Hamer wears pretty dresses but is covered in tattoos and could probably kick my ass. |

They started the show with a salute to beer, which immediately won me over. At the climax of the performance, Gern F. left the stage and started plowing through the crowd like a sweaty rhino on a rampage. I would have hated to be in his path, but it was hilarious to watch. |

No one could ever claim that the Steel Workers' material is one-dimensional. They have songs about hot dogs, robbing banks, fixing cars, sheriffs, drag races, love and murder. The band realized about half-way through the show that their instrument volume was only about half as loud as it should have been. Things were much better after this was corrected. |

In the future, they may want to consider discussing wardrobe before the show. It looked like each of the six Steel Workers was plucked from a different era in North American history. Their upright bassist scores several points for doing that spin thing where he twirls his bass around and then stops it and starts playing again. I love that move.
