Katie Stelmanis @ Horseshoe Tavern
Friday March 07, 2008 @ 05:30 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

rcimage Band: Katie Stelmanis
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Venue: Horseshoe Tavern
Date: March 6, 2008
Reporter: Noah Love
BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION:
Stelmanis, a member of Bruce Peninsula, leads three other girls in a group that sound like Electrelane meets... Electrelane. Seriously, they sound a lot like Electrelane, but a little less gothic.

Grade: 79

Comment: Stelmanis and company played their Viking space pop with a lot of enthusiasm and volume, but the frontwoman's voice quickly became grating in conjunction with the equally spastic electronic noise that surrounded it.

Achievement of Rock 'n' Roll Expectations
80-100: Exceeds skill and knowledge expectations, i.e. rocked us so hard we peed our pants.
70-79: Achieves required skills and knowledge. Meets rock 'n' roll standard.
60-69: Demonstrates some skills. Approaches rock 'n' roll standard.
50-59: Demonstrates some required skills and knowledge in a limited way.
00-50: Has not demonstrated required skills or knowledge.

Oral And Visual Communication

Eye Contact: G Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Pronunciation: E I have basically the same criticism for Stelmanis and her band that I had for Dog Day: If you want to speak to the crowd, own the mic. Don't talk with your head turned away from it. The group had a conversation that they found pretty hilarious, but I'm pretty sure that's because it was audible in the monitors. Nobody else could hear it. Funny banter: wasted. When they weren't whispering to each other, the girls' voices boomed through the speakers and they connected with an interested crowd with ease.
Stage Presence: E

Musical Analysis

Level Of Participation: E Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Problem Solving: S This is the kind of music that will play really well at scenester shows in tiny clubs. And that's weird, given that Stelmanis is projecting so powerfully that her voice could easily fill a much bigger space. I just don't think the band could. Electrelane broke up for a reason — they could never get past a certain level because their music just didn't appeal to a big enough audience and they realized that was the case. Stelmanis is likely to encounter the same problem. I didn't mind the set, but I talked to quite a few people at the Shoe who were pretty put off.

Other Skills And Areas Of Interest

Charisma: E Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Problem Solving: S There's a market for this kind of sound, but I'm not sure Stelmanis will be able to capitalize on it. The band have a decent look and play well together, but their material needs some work. I wouldn't say they're far off, but Stelmanis has to figure out that you need to have different levels to maintain interest through a whole set. On the cool equipment tip, nice xylophone! Actually, all the percussion instruments were awesome and impressively employed. I was almost more interested in watching the percussionist, whose playing resembled that of Animal Collective's Panda Bear and was almost as impressive.
