Immaculate Machine @ Horseshoe Tavern Friday March 07, 2008 @ 04:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
 | Band: | Immaculate Machine | | Hometown: | Victoria, BC | | Venue: | Horseshoe Tavern | | Date: | March 6, 2008 | | Reporter: | Noah Love | | BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: | | Immaculate Machine hit the spotlight when Uncle Carl Newman called his niece Kathryn Calder up to be a full-time member of The New Pornographers. Immaculate Machine may as well be called Kathryn Calder's Other Pretty Good Band That Kind Of Sounds Just Like The New Pornographers. | | Comment: This Victorian trio play neat, catchy indie pop you could dance to if the mood strikes. Or you could clean the house to it. It's just pop, easy on the frills. | | Achievement of Rock 'n' Roll Expectations | | 80-100: Exceeds skill and knowledge expectations, i.e. rocked us so hard we peed our pants. | | 70-79: Achieves required skills and knowledge. Meets rock 'n' roll standard. | | 60-69: Demonstrates some skills. Approaches rock 'n' roll standard. | | 50-59: Demonstrates some required skills and knowledge in a limited way. | | 00-50: Has not demonstrated required skills or knowledge. | | Learning Skills: E=Excellent, G=Good, S=Satisfactory, N=Sad Really | Oral And Visual Communication | Eye Contact: | E | Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: | | Pronunciation: | E | Calder, guitarist Brooke Gallupe and drummer Luke Kozlowski were all focused on the crowd during their performance, but it was almost unsettling. They often looked straight ahead without much emotion and little accompanying movement. It was a tad robotic. Banter was almost non-existent, and the set came to an abrupt and less than rock 'n' roll halt when the group were informed they were finished when they asked for the time. | | Stage Presence: | G | | Stage Banter: | S | | Image: | G | | Appearance: | G | | Use Of Stage: | S | Musical Analysis | Level Of Participation: | S | Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: | | Problem Solving: | S | If Immaculate Machine weren't entirely buoyant, at least their songs were. One hummable track led into the next, and it felt like the trio were just gaining some momentum when they were cut off. It won't set your soul on fire, but it's the kind of music that's nice enough to hear whenever, wherever. That's not too shabby, right? | | Teamwork: | E | | Work Habits: | E | | Organization: | E | | Audience Participation: | S | | Sound: | E | | Composition: | E | | Songs: | E | Other Skills And Areas Of Interest | Charisma: | G | Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step: | | Problem Solving: | G | Immaculate Machine's three-part harmonies are fun and well constructed. I just can't shake the feeling they'll perpetually be an opening band for more of their lifespan. That's fine for Calder, whose fulltime job is pretty swank, but I'm not sure the other two guys are going to be able to keep it up as long. Unrelated: Upon later inspection, I liked Gallupe's shirt. Actually, they all dressed appropriately for their sound. | | Teamwork: | E | | Sexiness: | E | | Haircut: | E | | Indie Rock Footwear: | E | | Nods To Disposible Fashion: | E | | Cool Equipment: | E | | Level Of Inebriation: | N | | Actual Ability: | E |
