I See Rowboats @ Cameron House
Friday March 07, 2008 @ 04:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

rcimage Band: I See Rowboats
Hometown: Halifax, NS
Venue: Cameron House
Date: March 6, 2008
Reporter: Jared Morano
BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION:
I See Rowboats are an Atlantic-Canadian five-piece that blends Cape Breton folk with orchestral pop. Aside from the usual guitar-bass-drums they incorporate violin, viola, piano, cello, baritone uke, saxophone and glockenspiel.

Grade: 81

Comment: They're putting in the time, staying late and completing all their homework. A little more polish, a little less crappy-Canadian, and this folk/pop group will reach the top of their class. Their skill does not yet match their intentions, but sometimes a little heart and a lot of sweat is all you need.

Achievement of Rock 'n' Roll Expectations
80-100: Exceeds skill and knowledge expectations, i.e. rocked us so hard we peed our pants.
70-79: Achieves required skills and knowledge. Meets rock 'n' roll standard.
60-69: Demonstrates some skills. Approaches rock 'n' roll standard.
50-59: Demonstrates some required skills and knowledge in a limited way.
00-50: Has not demonstrated required skills or knowledge.

Oral And Visual Communication

Eye Contact: G Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Pronunciation: G Fiddler Luke Fisher may be the only member to stick to one instrument, but his command of the stage makes him look like a one-man orchestra. While all the members, including sleepy bear William Robinson, seemed excited to play their set in a city far from home, Fisher went above and beyond the set criteria to give a passionate, bow-shredding performance.

Musical Analysis

Level Of Participation: E Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Problem Solving: S I See Rowboats have a bad case of the crappy-Canadians. They need gear that doesn't burst into static during soft intros, they could be a lot tighter, and they should work harder on playing their instruments with quality, not quantity. Side effects of the crappy-Canadians include heartfelt songs where the beauty is in their subtlety, and unplanned moments of over-powering cohesion.

Other Skills And Areas Of Interest

Charisma: G Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Problem Solving: S Bonus marks are awarded for colour-coordination, which mixed white tops and black bottoms with the occasional red shirt, eclectic footwear, featuring Airwalks and fleece boots, and scruffy indie-dos, most likely brought on from weeks of grungey touring. Lisa Lipton's glasses are pretty sweet too, and it was pleasure to meet the parents, who came down all the way from Newfoundland.
