Pony Da Look @ Supermarket
Friday March 07, 2008 @ 11:30 AM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

rcimage Band: Pony Da Look
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Venue: Supermarket
Date: March 6, 2008
Reporter: Jill Langlois
BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION:
I bet Pony Da Look broke all the rules when they were in school, because they do now. Somehow, they still get away with it. With only keys, synths and drums, these four ladies sure can teach a room how to dance with their indie-new wave sound. Maybe it's because of singer Amy Bowles' intimidating stare?

Comment:I'd heard a lot about this quartet of females before their set at the Murderecords showcase on Thursday night, but I still wasn't expecting what I heard. The sound emitted from Bowles' mouth when she first opened it was borderline demonic, but as the show went on, it was easier to understand how all Pony Da Look's components fit together. It is perhaps a little far out when it comes to the usual type of rock 'n' roll out there, but pushing the envelope is what rock is all about.

Achievement of Rock 'n' Roll Expectations
80-100: Exceeds skill and knowledge expectations, i.e. rocked us so hard we peed our pants.
70-79: Achieves required skills and knowledge. Meets rock 'n' roll standard.
60-69: Demonstrates some skills. Approaches rock 'n' roll standard.
50-59: Demonstrates some required skills and knowledge in a limited way.
00-50: Has not demonstrated required skills or knowledge.

Oral And Visual Communication

Eye Contact: E Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Pronunciation: G Bowles knows how to work the stage, but her constant stare makes you uncomfortable after a while. You'll start to think you've been caught cheating. Their '80s inspired look, however, will make you want to keep looking. It's hard to take your eyes off reflective gold leggings and big hair. How very Degrassi.

Musical Analysis

Level Of Participation: G Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Problem Solving: G Pony Da Look have a definitive sound, and it works well for them. Not everybody could pull off what they do. On their self-proclaimed "dance song," Bowles stopped using the voice that'll give me nightmares tonight, and her vocals and harmonies from the rest sounded perfect. By far the most improved students.

Other Skills And Areas Of Interest

Charisma: E Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Problem Solving: G Pony Da Look have a way of bringing people into their world, even if they seemed to be working out a couple of kinks on Thursday night. They're on their way to doing something great, and their efforts have been noted. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
