Halifax's Dog Day have been piling up the cred points from being named a spin.com artist of the day and having their album Night Group put out by the very cool Tomlab label. ChartAttack talked to Seth Smith in advance of their CMW appearance.
So, you're about to play the big industry event that is Canadian Music Week. What's the most shameless thing you've ever done to promote your band?
Seth Smith: We are lazy and don't work very hard at promoting ourselves. We're more concerned with writing, recording and having fun. There are enough shamelessly promoted artists to go around out there.
What's the hardest part about being an up-and-coming band?
When you're strange, no one remembers your name.
How important is it for your band members to circulate and flirt with the audience before or after the show?
We really appreciate the people that come out to see us, but we can't always repay them by being social. We're kind of shy and usually hang out in the band room talking about astrology. I'm working very hard to get over my fear of people and social situations.
Have you ever stolen from someone else's rider? If so, who was it and what did you take?
If there is food and drinks backstage, we will take part. You gotta take what you can get. This is a priority for us. Usually we're eating all of Wintersleep's hummus.
Have you ever been graded before according to ChartAttack.com's Rock
'n' Roll Report Cards?
I don't know.
Does the idea of being graded bring back bad memories of being in elementary school or high school?
I don't usually like to be graded or evaluated on my performance. Reviews can make me feel invincible or like I'm doomed and I should quit life, so now I don't pay as much attention to them.
Have you done anything new or interesting this week?
I celebrated my birthday by making an impostor sculpture of my dog and then played with it to make my real dog jealous.
Dog Day play the Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday, March 6 at 9:20 p.m. as part of the annual Chart/Horseshoe/Canadian Music Week showcase.
