OASIS KEEP THEIR SONG TO THEMSELVES

U.K. group Urban Cookie Collective (who scored a hit with "The Key, The Secret") have learned a copyright lesson the hard way this week. Seems that the group's new cover version of Oasis' "Champagne Supernova" has been shut down under threat of a lawsuit by song creator Noel Gallagher. According to a statement put out by Oasis's label, Creation Records, "Noel first heard of the track when a friend called him at home to say it was on Radio 1. He took exception to the fact that Urban Cookie Collective and their label had recorded a completely new arrangement of his song and garnered play on national radio without having the decency to contact him or his publishers, unlike Mike Flowers Pops (who had a hit with their version of Oasis' "Wonderwall") who asked Noel's permission in advance."

BLACK CAT BONE KEYBOARDIST IN CAR ACCIDENT

Some pretty tough news was passed onto me by Vancouver radio station CFOX staffer Mary Ann McKenzie; here it is verbatim:
A tragic accident has left a well-known Vancouver musician in very serious condition in hospital. Paul Buonassisi, the keyboard player from Black Cat Bone, is in a coma after a car accident this past weekend. Paul was a passsenger in a car that slammed into the back of a parked semi-trailer unit loaded with lumber. Eric Webster, the keyboardist with the Colin James band, was also a passenger in that car. Webster escaped with relatively minor injuries. The two were returning from a house party which they attended after a Black Cat Bone gig on Vancouver Island. Paul was airlifted to Vancouver, spend five hours in surgery, but has not yet come out of the coma. Black Cat Bone manager Jessica Gihon says that the band and Paul’s family ask for your prayers. Black Cat Bone was the first runner-up in THE FOX’s DemoListen Derby contest this year, and is featured on the newly released Vancouver Seeds Eleven CD. They were to play a series of concerts around Vancouver over the next two weeks.

TROUBLES IN THE HOOTIE HOUSE

Go figure. 54.40's beautiful ballad "I Go Blind", as many of you know, was covered (rather exactly) by Hootie and the Blowfish awhile back. The group decided at the last minute to not include the number on their debut disc Cracked Rear View, instead including it much later on the Friend's soundtrack. Well, the song has hit big time in the 'States, but unfortunately for those Blowfish, no one is interested in buying their new disc Fairweather Johnson: it's "I Go Blind" or nothing for radio stations and fans. According to Billboard Magazine, the group's manager Rusy Harmon was quoted as saying "This whole thing is one of those monsters you wish you could create, but when you have it, you wish you could kill it." Wait! I've got a better idea! Buy the 54.40 version, folks! It's wayyyy better!

AWW...AIN'T LOVE GRAND?

Congratulations go out to Pavement vocalist Scott Kannberg who married his beloved last week in California. There's a wee bit of time for a honeymoon before all hell breaks loose and the group releases their next disc Brighten The Corners in February.
