Centaur Productions and the YWCA of Greater Toronto have combined forces to organize a benefit concert. "No Place Like Home" is a unique event to be held December 15 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. The Cowboy Junkies, Melanie Doane and some special guests to be named later will perform, and the proceeds of the show will go to assist YWCA shelters in the Megacity. Tickets ($22.50 plus service charge and tax) can be purchased as of tomorrow from all Ticketmaster outlets, or by calling the Phoenix directly at (416) 323-1251. DAMN will announce the special guests in the next week.
The EDGE Electric Christmas bill continues to grow with the addition of former Lowest Of The Low frontman Ron Hawkins. Billed as Ron Hawkins & Some Rusty Nails, the Toronto s(w)inger and most of his crack five-piece band will join the exisitng lineup of Placebo, Limblifter and the Miller Stain Limit December 19 at The Guvernment. A few tickets are still available for just $15.99, so don't delay. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Leukemia Resarch Fund of Canada.
While the American Thanksgiving holiday dried up most news sources over the weekend, there's been no shortage of information flowing since Monday about that wacky Marilyn Manson. As DAMN reported last week, Manson went on a spree, wrecking hotel rooms, backstage dressing rooms (November 25) and allegedly threatening the editor of Spin (November 26). Craig Marks told police he was roughed up by Manson's bodyguards after a New York City show, and that he believes it was a pre-meditated attack. Marks is considering a civil lawsuit against Manson.
"I don't know what he hoped to gain. I don't know if he was trying to intimidate me or just act out for his bandmates", Marks told Rocktropolis. He says Manson confronted him, saying "So, what's the deal?", but did not explain himself; the next thing Marks knew, he was up against the wall, held in place off the ground and unable to breathe at one point. When the bodyguards released Marks, Manson reportedly said "That will teach you to disrespect me!" One of the guards is alleged to have said "Remember, when you're dealing with Manson, you're also talking to us."
It's possible Manson was executing something of a power play/publicity stunt after Spin retracted an offer to put him on the cover of their January 1999 issue. Manson, meanwhile has responded to the incident via a press statement on his official website. It reads "I had a conversation with Craig Marks expressing I was tired of Spin's immature business behavior and the series of deals they had broken with me. I told him that I no longer care what he prints or weather (sic) I'm on the cover. I simply no longer wanted to work with him or his magazine that obviously has a lack of respect for musicians and their fans." The incident is still being investigated by New York police.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Jewel's former manager has filed a lawsuit claiming wrongful termination. Inga Vainshtein is seeking over $10 million U.S. in lost wages, commission and damages. Vainshtein was Jewel's personal business manager throughout her rise to stardom. She was fired unexpectedly earlier this year, only to be replaced almost immediately by Jewel's mother Lenedra Carroll. Carroll is also named in the suit; she has no previous managerial experience, and Vainshtein believes the woman intentionally pushed Jewel to make the change. Jewel's new album Spirit entered the Billboard Top 200 retail chart at #3 last week, and #6 here on the Canadian Soundscan Top Retail Albums chart.

"I looked at the dressing room, and I thought it needed some remodeling. If you were me and you were in a dressing room, wouldn't you do the same?"
-- Marilyn Manson tells David Letterman why he trashed the backstage area at a recent show.
