For those of you looking for something to do in the Toronto area tonight, D.A.M.N. urges you to consider an event taking place at Lee's Palace (529 Bloor St. West). For just $5.00, you can support the Artists Against Violence fundraiser. All proceeds go to the Redwood Shelter, an organization that assists women and children fleeing from family violence. Featured artists at tonight's concert include Jimmy Allen's Ant Farm, Kuru, Zila Hayes, Nummmb and Jay Englishman of Tomorrow The World (who is the brother of Esthero, for all you trainspotters). Doors open at 8:00pm, first act hits the stage at 9:00pm, and additional donations are more than welcome. For more information about Artists Against Violence, contact their offices at (416) 516-8704.
Just when D.A.M.N. thought all the loonies in the world had taken the rest of the year off, Mark Nieto has gone and ruined everything. MTV News Online says Nieto has filed a lawsuit against veteran rockers Aerosmith claiming he suffered permanent hearing loss at an October 1997 California concert. The Associated Press report that the plaintiff "was not made aware of the possibility of such a hearing loss prior to the show". Yep, only in America can you sue someone for your own personal lack of common sense. Nieto is also seeking money from the Concord Pavilion, which hosted the fateful live event in which the poor young lad so rudely discovered that performances by rock and roll bands can be kinda loud. This seems a bit confused to D.A.M.N.: suing a band for not warning their fans that loud music can damage your hearing is a bit like suing Taco Bell for not putting "Warning: May Cause Diarhhea" on their food wrappers. Aerosmith play Hamilton's Copps Coliseum this weekend, so as a service to all of you who plan to attend, D.A.M.N. advises that you all be prepared to wake up with ringing ears Sunday morning. Meanwhile, somebody slap that guy...the fatwa has been issued!
The ubiquitous Puff Daddy (real name Sean Combs) is a little less ubiquitous this week after pulling out of an Oliver Stone film due to start shooting in January 1999. The movie, Any Given Sunday, which MTV News Online reports is also being called The League, was to star Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid and Puffy. Combs' role was as back-up quarterback Willie Beaman, who steps in to lead the team when star pivot Quaid is injured. The role will now be played by comedian Jamie Foxx, who is the star of his own TV show on the WB network (home to both Dawson's Creek and Felicity). There has been no official statement from Puffy yet as to why he vacated the role, but D.A.M.N. assumes his musical commitments were too great to follow through on the shooting schedule. The film is expected to see release next year (probably around the time the football season kicks off).
Former Smiths singer Stephen Patrick Morrissey has formally launched an appeal in a London High Court, hoping to overturn a 1996 ruling that saw him pay out over one million pounds to drummer Mike Joyce. The original court case involved a lawsuit brought against Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr by Joyce and bassist Andy Rourke, based on what the rhythm section perceived to be an unfair business relationship. To translate, once the Smiths became successful, Joyce and Rourke were unsatisfied by the 10% share each received of the band's recording and performing royalties, despite having agreed to that amount in the past. Morrissey and Marr, being the chief songwriters, each received 40% of the royalties. Marr escaped the case unscathed, leaving Morrissey to foot the enormous cost of the settlement the judge awarded Joyce (Rourke was deemed ineligible based on his acceptance of an earlier settlement for far less money). According to NME.com and numerous Mozzer fan websites, Morrissey's appeal centres around his belief that the judge in the original case did not have a clear understanding of the business relationship between the members of the Smiths. Mike McCann is a DJ, writer and music fanatic who climbed the ladder from college radio to a major label weasel, and now has come to rest happily at Chart. He loves Depeche Mode, The Wonder Stuff, Monty Python, calamari, and he's awfully fond of the Stretcha, too. He's also been known to mangle great songs live with understanding bands who keep letting him get up to sing 'em...stupid bastards.
