ART BERGMANN RELEASES NEW CD; ANNOUNCES TOUR

Art Bergmann, the "Generation X Bukowski" (with a tip of the hat to Mr. Ron Hawkins for that line), is releasing a new acoustic album next week called Design Flaw. It's a collection of thirteen classic Bergmann compositions from the last decade, performed on a 12-string with very little in the way of glossy production. The album was more or less recorded in industry legend Peter Moore's kitchen, featuring the deeply-respected Chris Spedding on occasional accompaniment. Design Flaw includes tracks like "Hospital Song", "Faithlessly Yours" and "More Blue Shock". To coincide with the disc's release, Art has announced a western Canadian tour beginning November 2. After the album's official release party in Toronto tonight, Bergmann is taking his guitar on the road to the following cities:

  • November 2 Whistler, BC Boot Pub
  • November 6 Vancouver, BC The Gate
  • November 7 Victoria, BC Steamers
  • November 8 Nanaimo, BC The Queen's
  • November 10 Calgary, AB Republik
  • November 13 Saskatoon, SK The Wash'n Slosh
  • November 14 Edmonton, AB Rebar

METALLICA COVERS ALBUM COMING NOVEMBER 23

Metallica's Garage Inc. album of cover versions has been scheduled for a November 23 release in North America. The 2CD-set features 27 tunes, 11 of which have never been released before. The other 16 have turned up on various Metallica releases, primarily the Garage Days Re-Revisited EP from 1987. Here's the tracklisting, and a list of who the original artists were:

  • "Free Speech For The Dumb" - Discharge
  • "It's Electric" - Diamond Head
  • "Sabbra Cadabra" - Black Sabbath
  • "Turn The Page" - Bob Seger
  • "Die Die My Darling" - The Misfits
  • "Loverman" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
  • "Mercyful Fate" - Mercyful Fate
  • "Astronomy" - Blue Oyster Cult
  • "Whiskey In The Jar" - Thin Lizzy
  • "Tuesday's Gone" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • "The More I See" - Discharge
  • "Helpless" - Diamond Head
  • "The Small Hours" - Holocaust
  • "The Wait" - Killing Joke
  • "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" - Budgie
  • "Last Caress"/"Green Hell" - The Misfits
  • "Am I Evil?" - Diamond Head
  • "Blitzkrieg" - Blitzkrieg
  • "Breadfan" - Bughie
  • "The Prince" - Diamond Head
  • "Stone Cold Crazy" - Queen
  • "So What" - Anti-Nowhere League
  • "Killing Time" - Sweet Savage
  • "Overkill" - Motorhead
  • "Damage Case" - Motorhead
  • "Stone Dead Forver" - Motorhead
  • "Too Late Too Late" - Motorhead

Those with a keen eye will detect Metallica's love of drinking songs and cheese-metal. Having said that, their version of "Stone Cold Crazy" (originally found on the Elektra Records Rubayait compilation) kicks more ass than The Ultimate Warrior, who mopped up the whole NWO last night in his triumphant return to the ring.

    UNAUTHORIZED CURE WEBSITE SHUT DOWN

Sonicnet is reporting that an enormous fan-operated website devoted to The Cure was shut down earlier this week by the Recording Industry Association of America. The site, The Cure MP3 Audio Archive was home to over 750 live recordings by the pioneering British band, which had been compressed and made into MP3 files by a student at Texas A&M University. The RIAA, the governing body in America which regulates and supervises all sales, ownership and copyright of recorded material, contacted the university to ask the student to take the site offline. This action was at the request of Elektra Records, despite the fact that the individual hosting the site maintains the band 'indirectly condoned" the site and its contents. Apparently the debate is over the rarities and B-sides, not the live material, which has been available for some time and is not coming at the expense of preventing sales of official live material by The Cure. The student initially removed all the studio material, but now all the live files are in limbo as well. This is an ongoing debate these days, as there are no clear rules about what constitutes piracy in the form of computer downloads of audio material. For a detailed look at the MP3 debate, check out the November issue of Chart Magazine's web column Charlie Don't Surf"...in stores November 1.

COOLIO'S VERSION OF HIS SEPTEMBER ARREST

As reported last month (see 09/18/98 D.A.M.N.), Coolio was arrested September 15 in Lawndale, California on a number of violations. According to the police report, the rapper was parked on the wrong side of the road, was carrying an expired driver's licence, had a weapon in the car and was in possession of marijuana as well. Coolio went online last night to talk about the arrest, and the details of what he says actually happened. As an explanation of why he chose the Internet to give his side of the story, Coolio said "on the web, you get to say things you really said. There's no way anyone can twist up what you say." He went on to reveal that while his licence had expired a month prior to the incident, his weapon was registered, unloaded and stored safely. He also told listeners that three of his seven children were with him in the vehicle, and that he was on his way to a weekly meeting with his wife at a nearby shooting range (hence the gun). "I wasn't driving down the wrong side of the street, smoking marijuana, waving my gun out the window. I had my children in the car with me; I was not setting a bad example. It was an overzealous police officer and a way-trumped up situation -- a situation blown out of proportion." Coolio went on to suggest there may have been racial overtones to the incident, but did not make this into a black-white issue. "Because I'm a young black man driving a really nice, expensive car, I sometimes get harassed when I'm rolling through a ghetto neighbourhood. The cops don't know who I am right away -- their first thought is, 'That must be a dope dealer or some kind of gangster...let's go see.'" D.A.M.N. will keep an eye on the story as Coolio's day in court approaches...
