TODAY'S TOP 4 HEADLINES:

KISS FLICK TO BE FILMED IN T.O.

The KISS Army are setting up camp in Toronto later this month to film Detroit Rock City, the band's first motion picture since KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park over 20 years ago. The film is a comedy directed by Adam Rifkin (Small Soldiers) and starring Edward Furlong (Pecker, Terminator 2: Judgement Day) which centres around four teenagers and their quest for tickets to a sold-out 1978 KISS concert. The big news is that the production will require about 500 extras each night to recreate the wild atmosphere outside a venue where the band are performing. To be an extra, call (416) 463-1972. All those appearing in the film will need to be in period costume, or even better, full KISS makeup.

The band will not be present for the scenes being shot in T.O. (The Big Smoke is standing in for The Motor City, as the scenes being shot here are supposed to double for Detroit's Cobo Hall), but Mercury Records and the band want to make the filming into a full-blown KISS event. To that end, an enormous collection of KISS swag is being offered up. At the conclusion of each night's filming, a draw will be held among the extras for a bounty of booty, including:

  • A guitar autographed by KISS
  • A leather jacket autographed by KISS
  • 5 KISSTORY books, each autographed
  • 10 autographed Psycho Circus posters
  • 25 Psycho Circus CD's
  • 25 Psycho Circus posters

A Grand Prize will also be given away when the Toronto shoot wraps: two tickets to Los Angeles on November 6 to take part in the film's climactic recreation of a Love Gun show. Good luck to all those who make the grade as KISS extras!

CAKE STOP, DROP AND ROLL AT NYC GIG

Sacramento jazz-rockers Cake had a close call Monday night in New York City; a fire broke out in the building next door to the concert hall they were scheduled to play at that night! Allstar reports that the blaze was actually discovered by the band's bassist Gabe Nelson. "He was out on the roof getting high," Cake's smirking singer John McCrea told the crowd later that night, "then he saw the flames and notified the proper authorities." Nelson spotted the fire around 10:00pm, just moments before the band were due to take the stage. The Bowery Ballroom was promptly evacuated, and firefighters were called to the scene.

"We were on the roof and saw orange flames coming out of the window next door, three stories down," trumpeter/keyboardist Vince Fiore told Allstar as the flames were extinguished. "We got the guitars out, and I took my trumpet, but the rest of our equipment is still onstage." It's just as well the gear wasn't removed, because within an hour of the fire's detection, the New York Fire Department had things in check. By 11:00pm, the doors of the Bowery Ballroom re-opened, and Cake played their planned set to a thrilled audience who got more for their money than they possibly could have imagined. The fire is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.

GIGOLO AUNTS GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP...

One of Boston's finest bands have been laying low for a few years, but they are poised to go for the gold in 1999 with some help from a few high-powered fans. Allstar reports that the Gigolo Aunts will release a new album entitled Minor Chords and Major Themes in January on the E Pluribus Unum label. Said label just happens to be owned by Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz, and is distributed by Universal. An impressed Duritz inked the Gigolo Aunts late last year after they opened for the Counting Crows on their North American tour for Recovering The Satellites.

Another Adam has also lent a hand to the recording of the new Aunts album: Adam Schlesinger of both Fountains of Wayne and Ivy has laid down some vocals (alongside Duritz) for an untitled song on Minor Chords.... Schlesinger is also taking Gigolo Aunts guitarist John Skibic on tour with Ivy in the coming months. The Gigolo Aunts' debut full-length album Flippin' Out brought them critical praise and some commercial success with tracks like "Where I Find My Heaven" and "Bloom". They toured extensively with both The Wonder Stuff and Love Spit Love before losing some personnel. The newly revitalized quartet released the How To Play Guitar EP earlier this year, and a track from the forthcoming album called "You'd Better Get Yourself Together" has been placed in the new smash TV series Felicity. Welcome back, guys...

Mike McCann is a DJ, writer and music fanatic who climbed the ladder from college radio to a major label weasel, and now has come to rest happily at Chart. He loves Depeche Mode, The Wonder Stuff, Monty Python, calamari, and he's awfully fond of the Stretcha, too. He's also been known to mangle great songs live with understanding bands who keep letting him get up to sing 'em...stupid bastards.

    Quote of the Week

"We're having a problem with flames."

-- An employee of the Bowery Ballroom, extinguisher in hand, announces a fire to the crowd at Cake's October 12 gig (as reported in Allstar 10/13/98).
