MUCHMUSIC VIDEO AWARDS RECAP

It was a star-studded evening opened by the Smashing Pumpkins, closed by the Barenaked Ladies and held together by duct tape (hell-oooo, Rachel Perry!) The backstage media tent was a freakin' zoo, but spirits were high and there were delicious mashed potatoes to make it all better. D.A.M.N. spent the evening chatting with Billy Corgan, Chris Sheppard, Jim Creeggan, David Usher, Holly McNarland, Trevor Hurst, A.J. McLean, Jason Priestley, Maestro Fresh Wes, Robbie from the Goo Goo Dolls, Ian Thornley, Stu Cameron, The Watchmen, Curt Smith (ex-Tears For Fears), Kardinal Offishall, Darren Hayes and the Vibrolux gang. Lest you get the impression that the party was more important than the ceremonies, here's a quick recap of who won what this year:

  • Best Editing - Sarah McLachlan
  • Best Director - Matthew Good Band
  • Best Cinematography - The Tea Party ("Release")
  • Best Rap Video - The Rascalz
  • Best Video - Love Inc.
  • Best Soul/R&B Video - Kaybe
  • Best Independent Video - Serial Joe
  • Best Dance Video - Love Inc.
  • Best International Video - Madonna
  • MuchMoreMusic Award - Jann Arden
  • Best Performance - The Tragically Hip
  • Best French Video - Dubmatique
  • Favourite Canadian Artist - Celine Dion
  • Favourite Canadian Group - Our Lady Peace
  • Favourite Canadian Video - Sarah McLachlan
  • Favourite International Artist - Will Smith
  • Favourite International Group - Backstreet Boys

Other winners included David Bowie, who accepted the Eyepopper Award (sort of like a lifetime achievement award for cool videos), and The Watchmen, who were recognized for their innovative use of new technology with an award that included a cheque for $2,500. Best after-party award goes to Revolver, whose bash at The Courthouse was so well-attended it felt like half the world was there! D.A.M.N. also slipped across town to The Opera House to catch the tail end of The Misfits set before finally crawling into bed at around 4:00am! Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks again to all those who participated in our online contest...the grand prize will be awarded on Monday.

ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

Fifteen new nominees are working on acceptance speeches this week (that only half will get to read) after the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced this year's possible inductees. The list looks like this:

  • Black Sabbath
  • The Staples Singers
  • Paul McCartney (already a member as part of The Beatles)
  • The Flamingos
  • Darlene Love
  • Dusty Springfield
  • Solomon Burke
  • Gene Pitney
  • The Moonglows
  • Del Shannon
  • Ritchie Valens
  • Billy Joel
  • Curtis Mayfield
  • Steely Dan
  • Bruce Springsteen

Over 800 music industry muckety-mucks will vote to induct as many as eight of the candidates into the Hall this November. Expect a wide array of styles to be represented in the final cut, which shouldn't be too difficult this year given the heavy metal, gospel and soul legends that made the short list.

BACKSTREET BOYS SUE THEIR SVEN GALI

It's official; the Backstreet Boys are launching a lawsuit against Louis J. Pearlman, the man who discovered the boy band and produced their first two albums. Pearlman is alleged to have kept a higher percentage of the group's earnings than the contract he drew up in 1993 outlined. Lawyers for the Backstreet Boys hope to settle this dispute out of court, but are prepared to go to trial if need be. Pearlman contends that his share of the money is exactly what the agreement says it should be. The Backstreet Boys legal team is headed up by Mel Pearlman (no relation to the defendant), who is not only seeking the disputed sum (which nobody will reveal), he's also asking for additional money which would presumably fall under some sort of damages claim. One of Louis J. Pearlman's attorneys told the press that "Mr. Pearlman likes to call himslef a sixth Backstreet Boy...He approaches everything from the standpoint of being family." Pearlman is still actively involved with the careers of the Boys. D.A.M.N. will follow this story, especially if an out-of-court settlement can't be agreed upon.

JANET JACKSON DOES MUCH NEXT MONDAY

Never one to rest on their laurels, MuchMusic will tidy the place up over the weekend and throw another big party Monday night. The occasion? Superstar Janet Jackson is going to make a house call for a 90 minute special hosted by VJ Juliette Powell. Think of it as an Intimate & Interactive without the performance element, as Janet will take questions from audience members and home viewers from across North America. To celebrate this one-on-one opportunity, Much will practically devote their evening programming to the most normal Jackson in the whole litter. Beginning at 5:00pm Monday, "JanetTV - Part 2" hits the airwaves: videos, interviews, concert footage and trivia runs solid until 7:00pm, when Janet will appear live in the Much environment. Once she departs, Much runs "JanetTV - Part 2" as a conclusion to the evening's festivities.

The program is aired Sunday nights in the Toronto area at 7:00pm on Edge102 (102.1 FM), and Mondays at 11:00pm. SMASHING PUMPKINS, RADIOHEAD, ROB ZOMBIE, PUFF DADDY, MADONNA, SIMPLE MINDS, OSCAR PETERSON, MUCHMUSIC VIDEO AWARDS ON THE TUBE THIS WEEKEND

Late night sees Rob Zombie getting under David Letterman's skin (11:35pm, CBS) and Chris Isaak plugging in with Leno (11:35pm, NBC). If you have HBO, check out Puff Daddy on Chris Rock's show (check listings). Catching the reruns of Saturday Night Live on the Comedy Network is always a good opportunity to watch encore performances from hitmakers of the past. This weekend, you have Santana (Friday @ 3:00pm), John Cougar Mellencamp (Friday @ midnight), Greg Kihn (Saturday @ 11:00am), and Simple Minds (Sunday @ 11:00am -- as an added bonus, Madonna hosts that last one). Take your pick. Speaking of SNL, it's the time of year again for its highly anticipated (?) season premiere. Smashing Pumpkins are the musical guests, so here's a chance to see them on TV if you missed the MuchMusic Video Awards. Fellow super-band Radiohead also hit the small screen this weekend -- Much will air the band's performance at the Eurokeennes Music Festival at 9:00pm. Sunday looks to be slow day for music on the tube, but you might want to check out CBS News Sunday Morning for its segment on Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson (9:00am). Other than that, MuchMusic will re-broadcast its Video Awards show at 8:00pm. All times are EST. For the ultimate guide to music on television, check out Rock on TV.

    Quote of the Week

"In the States there's this nudie mag called Celebrity Skin which shows photos of any celebrity who has a nipple or a vagina coming out during an event, like a gown gave away too much."

-- Courtney Love reveals the source of the new Hole album title, and the fact that famous people don't own underwear.
