TODAY'S TOP 4 HEADLINES:
Now here's a subject that came up in the Chart offices a few weeks ago in our daily discussions/arguments about the music business. Hole's new album Celebrity Skin made a respectable-to-solid debut around the world last week, generally charting within or just outside the top ten in most countries. There also happens to be an American magazine called Celebrity Skin, which is a Hollywood soft-porn publication. They have been publishing racy photos of scantily-clad celebrities (mostly actresses whose dresses don't fit properly) for nineteen years now. The mag actually featured more than one revealing Courtney Love photo in the past. Love is fully aware of the mag's existence, and the publishers claim that she approached them seeking permission to use the name as the title for the next Hole album, but proceeded to use it before she had been granted clearance.
Nobody is specifying whether legal action is planned, but Crescent Publishing have told the press that Love might "have crossed the line to trademark infringement". The outspoken leader of Hole is on record as early as 1995 with the idea to call her next album Celebrity Skin, as evidenced by this excerpt from an interview with New Musical Express: "I have a total vision for the record, I have a title. I want to call it Use Once And Destroy or Celebrity Skin. I think I'm gonna call it Celebrity Skin because I've touched so goddamn much of it. I love that title - it's very poignant. In the States there's this nudie mag called Celebrity Skin which shows photos of any celebrity who has a nipple or a vagina coming out during an event, like a gown gave away too much." The opinion in the Chart office is that Celebrity Skin magazine should count their blessings that Courtney has decided to throw a little press their way...subscriptions could skyrocket!
Rappers Coolio and Ol' Dirty Bastard were both arrested earlier this week in non-related incidents in California. Coolio was pinched by police in Lawndale, CA for a number of offences, including possession of a concealed firearm (which he notified them of), marijuana (which they subsequently found during a search of his vehicle), an expired driver's license and the activity that spawned all the trouble: he was driving his Hummer on the wrong side of the road. He was charged with the above four counts, then released with a $1,000 U.S. citation. He is due to appear in court October 21 to face the charges against him, and will be online to discuss his arrest with fans (www.cooliosofficialwebsite.com) tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Ol' Dirty Bastard, already wanted on a number of outstanding warrants, was arrested again Wednesday night outside of the House Of Blues club in West Hollywood. Nothing as silly as shoplifting this time, kids; ODB was ejected from the club for drunkenness, and while outside the rapper threatened to return to the club and kill the security staff. He was arrested for uttering terrorist threats, taken to the West Hollywood station, and eventually released on $50,000 U.S. bail yesterday. He is scheduled to appear at Beverly Hills Municipal Court October 8 to face the charge...wonder if he'll break with tradition and actually show up?
Fresh from their Summersault '98 appearances with pals Our Lady Peace, Garbage continue to tour the world in support of their new album Version 2.0. Since a good number of their European festival appearances this summer coincided with World Cup soccer mania, there were delays before their sets some days which gave them a chance to work on new material. Garbage have also been recording each of these shows as a way of harvesting future B-sides. Butch, Duke, Steve and Shirley have been ducking into studios at every opportunity to lay down some of these new ideas, and have collaborated with both Billy Corgan and Dave Grohl thus far on songs that should appear on Garbage's third album. There is also talk that a mid-priced live album could be available in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, the next single from Version 2.0 will be "Special".
Pop darlings Red Autumn Fall have returned to Toronto from their western Canadian tour dates, incuding some homecoming shows in Calgary. They have lined up a great show here in T.O. for September 26, incuding special guests Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy and Chris Field. The show is at The Reverb. As an added bonus to an already impressive lineup, Duffy has a high-powered Canadian friend that is rumoured to be making an appearance at the concert. This person is a songwriting partner of Duffy's from a popular Canuck band who is in town for just "One Week". (Is that a big enough hint?) D.A.M.N. has ten spaces on the guest list for this show to give away (so five winners can each take a pal) to the quick-witted people that can answer this Red Autumn Fall trivia question: Which two songs on the new RAF album Departure are related lyrically, and tell the continuing story of the Blazer Boys? Answers to scoop@chartnet.com. Good luck!
THE ONGOING HISTORY OF NEW MUSIC
This weekend, the radio show The Ongoing History Of New Music takes a look at the death of INXS singer Michael Hutchence. Hutchence's estate has not been settled yet, and there is ongoing drama surrounding his relationship with Paula Yates and her ex-husband Sir Bob Geldof. The program is aired Sunday nights in the Toronto area at 7:00pm on Edge102 (102.1 FM), and Mondays at 11:00pm. For those of you outside the megacity, you can listen to the show when it's webcast simultaneously...point your browser to www.Edge102.ca.
J. DAVIS TRIO, PIETASTERS, GUIDED BY VOICES, OMC, BIO RITMO, CHERRY POPPIN' DADDIES ONLINE THIS WEEKEND
Tonight on JamTV, a live performance from underground darlings J. Davis Trio gets the ball rolling at 8:00pm. Next, listen in on backstage interviews with both The Pietasters and Guided By Voices at 8:45pm. And what night wouldn't be complete without an OMC concert at 9:45pm? Over on www.liveconcerts.com,
catch Bio Ritmo and Cherry Poppin' Daddies at 9:30pm. All times are EST.
ROBERT PLANT, BRIAN SETZER, ESTHERO, COWBOY JUNKIES, HANSON, BACKSTREET BOYS, SPINAL TAP ON THE TUBE THIS WEEKEND
Not much on the tube for music this weekend. Friday is the best pick: Robert Plant does his leather-pants thing like no one else on a repeat SNL (3:00pm, Comedy Network); tune into Showcase at 3:45 pm to watch Grease, and the History Channel charts the birth of rock n' roll at 5:00pm with a documentary on music in the fifties. Late night sees The Brian Setzer Orchestra visit Letterman (11:35pm, CBS), Leno gets soulful with Al Green (11:35pm, NBC), and Conan welcomes Los Super Seven (12:35am, NBC). The jewel-of-the-night goes to Chris Rock for booking the heavenly Esthero (HBO, check listings). A close second for jewel-of-the-night: Cowboy Junkies on another SNL rerun (midnight, Comedy). Saturday presents an interesting dilemma: do you watch Hanson and the Backstreet Boys on TV, or do you venture outdoors? If the tube wins that battle, the blonde trio hits the MuchMusic Big Ticket with a concert from New York at 6:00pm (which complies nicely with early bedtimes for the munchkins). Don't forget the Boys of Backstreet, though, as Much brings you the Backstreet Bonanza , an all-out blitz of videos, interviews, and specials beginning at 3:30pm. The Comedy Network's Viva Variety show (10:30pm) has musical guest Jonathan Richman (fresh from his gig on There's Something About Mary). Sunday looks slow for music on the tube, but you might want to catch the Comedy Network's airing of This is Spinal Tap. Get ready to laugh yer arse off. One problem: it's on at 7:00 am, so maybe set your VCR. All times are EST. For the ultimate guide to rock, check out Rock on TV.
D.A.M.N. is compiled by Mike McCann most of the time.

"A girl came up to me at EDGEfest and said 'I want to go in the hot tub backstage with all the bands!' And I said, 'No you don't. Nice girls don't go in hot tubs with bands'."
-- Bif Naked shatters myths about the rock and roll lifestyle (there was no hot tub backstage, by the way!)
