SLOAN ANNOUNCE CANADIAN TOUR DATES

After wowing audience this summer on both EDGEfest and Summersault '98 dates, Toronto-via-Halifax quartet Sloan have announced a three-week Canadian headlining tour. The guys will begin their trek in Victoria, British Columbia October 17 and wrap things up with a two-night stand at Toronto's Masonic Temple (p.k.a. The Concert Hall). Jay Ferguson says "We're happy to finally be touring Canada on our own. It'll be great playing for all our fans. We've missed them." The dates look like this:

  • October 17 Victoria, BC University of Victoria
  • October 19 Vancouver, BC The Croation Cultural Centre
  • October 21 Edmonton, AB Shaw Conference Centre
  • October 22 Lethbridge, AB University of Lethbridge
  • October 23 Calgary, AB Mount Royal College - Wyckham House
  • October 24 Calgary, AB University of Calgary - MacEwan Hall
  • October 25 Saskatoon, SK University of Saskatoon - Marquis Hall
  • October 26 Winnipeg, MB Walker Theatre
  • October 28 London, ON The Drink
  • October 29 Guelph, ON University of Guelph - Peter Clark Hall
  • October 30 St. Catharines, ON The Niagara Dome
  • November 1 Montreal, QC Le Spectrum
  • November 4/5 Toronto, ON The Concert Hall***

***D.A.M.N. wonders if the fact that The Concert Hall (now home to the Mike Bullard Show) is wired for T.V. sound and lighting might suggest that the boys in the band are planning to film/record these two nights for possible commercial release at a later date?

All these shows look set to be all-ages events, even the ones on university campuses. Sloan are currently touring America, capitalizing on the recent glowing review their newest album Navy Blues received in People Magazine's September 7 - 11 issue. Once the Canadian tour is complete, the band are off to Japan for more shows to coincide with the release of Navy Blues there. The Gold-plus album here in Canada will also be released in Australia soon. In other Sloan news, murderecords (in conjunction with Never Records Group) have arranged for both Smeared and One Chord To Another to be re-released in America November 3 after less than satisfying campaigns the first time around by Geffen and The Enclave respectively.

    TORONTO HOSTS TIBETAN MUSIC FEST

September 19 marks a special humanitarian event in Toronto, as some local movers and shakers have organized a Tibetan Music Fest that will see an all-night party raise money and awareness for the ongoing plight of those opressed by the Chinese government. Among the performers who are donating their time to this show are Acme, Blasternaut, Blisterine, Fyoosha, Jeff Allan Greenway, Holly Go Lightly, Kiva, The Kramdens, Greg Lawless, Mayor McCa, Scott McLauglin, Nummmb, Phuse, Speed Orchid and YBZ. DJ's Rick Scott, Mike Wade, Jason Marshall, Kieran, Hummer and Jabba Cuts will also be playing out during the music fest. The bands and DJ's will be appearing at a number of T.O. venues, including Ted's Wrecking Yard, Indigo Cafe, Twiggy, The 360, The Rivoli and We'ave, and the wrap party will be held at Twiggy Sunday night. The organizers of the festival are looking for conscientious volunteers to help out with selling band merchandise, circulating petitions and any other legwork that needs doing. You can reach Ron Reid Jr., the big cheese of the Tibetan Music Fest at tibet_fest@hotmail.com, or drop off some info about yourself and a number where you can be reached to 1172 Bay Street (across from the Manulife building at Bay & Bloor) by end of business tomorrow. Check out the event's official website for more details of which bands play which venue.

DOES THIS MEAN SHE'S MEL G. NOW?

Scary Spice, a.k.a. Mel B., a.k.a. Melanie Brown was married yesterday in England to Jimmy Gulzar, one of the pop group's Spice Boys dancing troupe. Gulzar is the Dutch hardbody whose bun is currently in Scary's oven. The ceremony was held at a church adjacent to Brown's Buckinghamshire estate, and close to 150 guests shared in the couple's special day. There were no bridesmaids, according to MTV News Online, but the other three Spice Girls were in attendance as regular guests. The Artist Formerly Known As Ginger Spice was not present, and told reporters at Heathrow airport she had not received an invite to Scary's nuptials. Kinda suggests all that talk about Mel B. being the one to drive Geri out of the band might have been true, hmm? In the meantime, the remaining Spices (two of whom are showing) perform next week at London's Wembley Stadium prior to some time off.

    Quote of the Week

"Shut up! I'm playing. I've come 10,000 miles to give you my life story, so get into it. If you want to make a speech, go to a bingo hall."

-- Bernard Butler, former Suede guitarist, addresses an allegedly noisy audience member at a recent Los Angeles concert.
