The 13th Annual MTV Video Awards came to pass last night at Radio
City Music Hall in NYC. As can be expected, there was plenty of good
(Neil Young's timely performance of "The Needle And The Damage
Done"), bad Bone, Thugs-n-dis-Harmony's off-key
performance) and downright ugly (David Lee Roth's grotesque
booty-shakes). Here are a few of the award winners:
Best Alternative Video: Smashing Pumpkins "1979"
Best Male Video: Beck "Where It's At" (beating out Bryan Adams and
Coolio!)
Best Female: Alanis Morrisette's "Ironic"
Best New Artist: Alanis Morrisette (perhaps this should be re-named
'Most Improved?')
Best Dance Video: Coolio "1234"
Best Group Video: Foo Fighters "Big Me"
Best Hard Rock: Metallica "Until It Sleeps"
Viewer's Choice: Bush "Glycerine"
Video Of The Year: Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight"
The night included live performances by The 'Pumpkins, The
Fugees, Alanis and Oasis (headed by a pouty,
tantrum-filled Liam). Seems that many in the crowd have reached their
fill of the self-proclaimed "best fooking band in the world", as the
once-adulatory audience booed the lads offstage.
Monster Voodoo Machine recently announced their impending demise.
"We wanted to do this while the name still meant something" explained
vocalist Adam Sewell in their press release. Preferring to go out with a
bang, not a whimper, the group has three lives shows left in them before
taking their collective walk into the sunset:
September 26th, The Embassy, London ON
September 27th, Alexanders, Brantford
October 4th, The Volcano, Kitchener
Speaking of tours, the multi-talented West Coast-er Kinnie
Starr is spending some time back East this summer. She has finished
recording the debut video for her new cd Tidy and has planned a
whack of dates. Here's a few: for those who want more info, contact

The new Luscious Jackson album, Fever In Fever Out --
due at the end of October -- was co-produced by the group and Daniel
Lanois. The fine folks at Addicted To
Noise) report that the full-length will be preceeded by an e.p.,
featuring four remixes of the first single "Naked Eye".
The Tragically Hip will finally be taking their show on the road
this year, according to Jam. Starting out in the
east in early to mid October, the band will hit a dozen cities, from St.
John's, Newfoundland to Vancouver, BC. For info straight from the
source, check out The Hip's web
site directly.
And last but not least...
Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor is set to release a
compilation/fund-raising disc on October 15th, entitled Pine Ridge:
An Open Letter To Allan Rock. The disc is designed to once again
draw attention to and demand the release of Leonard Peltier from his
American jail cell. The line-up of contributing artists read like a
who's who of Canada's current-day musical celebs: Sarah
McLachlan, The 'Hip, Jane Siberry, Bob Wiseman
and a half dozen others. For more info on Peltier's story, check out The Official Leonard
Peltier Defense Site.
