TODAY'S TOP 4 HEADLINES:
The Animal Alliance benefit auction is online and running as of today. Point your browser to www.animalalliance.ca/anmag to check out the rare, autographed items up for grabs from some of the biggest names in music and television, including The Tragically Hip, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., Our Lady Peace, Moist, Sloan, Aqua, the cast of both Friends and Frasier, Conan O'Brien and many more! You can enter bids for the items you want online, and the auction wraps up September 24. That's also the day thatAnimal Magnetism '98 will be held in Toronto. It's the sixth annual benefit concert with all proceeds (including those from the auction) being donated to the Animal Alliance of Canada. There will be live performances from the Orange Alert crew (Robin Black & The Intergalactic Rock Stars, Vertigo, plasticpalacepeople), Superhalo and many more, as well as fashion and photography exhibits and special guest DJ's. The event will be held at The Reverb/Holy Joe's complex at 651 Queen Street West. Please have a look at the items or plan to attend the event, as every penny helps the Animal Alliance help those who can't help themselves.
The Tragically Hip are taking a few days off from their American tour to film a new video for their single "Something On". It's the second emphasis track from the band's Phantom Power album. In the director's chairs for the shoot September 8 will be the Hip's singer Gord Downie and his brother Mike. The two were also responsible for the "Poets" video, which is nominated for a MuchMusic Video Award for Best Performance. The shoot will take place in Baltimore, Maryland, and according to Mike himself, cult film director John Waters has been invited to the set!
Lauryn Hill, the only female Fugee stormed into the Number One position on Billboard's Top 200 retail chart this week. The 23-year-old new mom chalked up 423,000 copies of her debut album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill in its first week of release, which is a new Soundscan record for solo female artists. The previous record-holder was none other than Madonna, whose most recent album Ray Of Light shifted 370,000 units this March. Keep in mind that Soundscan has only been in operation since 1991, but it's a safe bet that enormous female stars before then wouldn't have made the same impact without the benefit of multi-media promotion and big bucks marketing plans. Hill joins fellow Fugees Wyclef Jean and Pras among the ranks of musicians who made good outside their usual artistic outlet. Wyclef's album The Carnival, his production work with acts like Canibus and Destiny's Child and his upcoming acting roles are keeping his profile high, and Pras hit the big time this summer with his "Ghetto Superstar" single from the Bulworth OST. The big question now is how long these solo successes will delay a new Fugees album!
Legendary goth-rockers Bauhaus are midway through a 2-night live stand here in Toronto (autographed copies of their new compilation album Crackle were selling for $40 last night),and they were exceptionally busy the week before as well. After playing the first of two shows at Chicago's Riviera Theater, the reunited quartet entered a local recording studio with engineer Chris Shepard (Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Wilco) to record two new songs. According to JamTV, Bauhaus laid down a version of Dead Can Dance's "Severance", which has turned up more often than not in their live set during this North American tour. They also began work an a completely new original Bauhaus number that is currently untitled.
Shepard is no stranger to the band, having already worked with singer Peter Murphy a few months ago on his forthcoming EP Recall (see July 28 D.A.M.N. for more details of that release). Shepard speculated that the band would likely book more studio time once their tour wraps up in November, and told JamTV he thinks that Bauhaus will release a full-length studio album (their first since 1983) as a consequence. Next week, Bauhaus play two more shows in New York City which will be recorded (audio and video) for a live album, and may eventually be released as a live video as well. Bauhaus also helped out old pal David Bowie earlier this week by participating in a live webcast to launch BowieNet, the chameleon-like singer's new Internet Service Provider/official website.

"We're in a position now where you have bands imitating old Pumpkins styles. You have Our Lady Peace, and they're basically doing a really good Siamese Dream imitation. I like them: I think they're good, and I'm flattered. But at the same time, it's bizarre."
-- Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins snuggles up to Raine and the boys.
