TODAY'S TOP 4 HEADLINES:

WYCLEF GUN INCIDENT STILL AN ISSUE

Last week, D.A.M.N. reported on an alleged incident involving Fugees member Wyclef Jean and the editor of a new urban magazine Blaze. Wyclef reportedly pulled a gun on Jesse Washington in a New York City boardroom as a means of threatening the editor into pulling a critical review of the new Canibusalbum which Jean had produced. Wyclef denied the incident, and issued a statement saying he doesn't carry a gun. Since then, an editor of another hip-hop mag has come forward, saying that Wyclef admitted pulling a piece on Washington. Peetah Cobb of Rap Pages says that the rapper has owned up to the incident to Cobb's staff, but that "Publicly, he's supposed to deny it." Cobb also says that Wyclef assured the Rap Pages editorial staff that the gun wasn't loaded. I guess that's supposed to make it OK, huh? Wyclef has not repsonded to this new development, and a spokesperson at his management office claims the rapper has "said his piece" and has no plans for a libel-based lawsuit. Likewise, Washington is not expected to pursue charges against Wyclef, although waving a gun in a threatening manner is considered a misdemeanour in New York State. More if it matters...

PIXIES TRIBUTE CD IN THE WORKS

California label Glue Factory are putting together a Pixies tribute album, featuring new takes on the Boston band's classic material by the likes of Weezer, Superdrag, Letters To Cleo and Nada Surf. Scheduled for a February 1999 release, the album is the brainchild of Kevin Knight, Glue Factory's president. Knight called Weezer boss Rivers Cuomo directly to ask if the band would contribute a song, and both Eve6 and the Jesus & Mary Chain have been contacted as well. That last one could be very interesting, considering the Pixies covered the Chain's "Head On" back on 1992's Trompe Le Monde album. According to AllStar online news, the confirmed tracklisitng for the album Where Is My Mind: A Tribute To The Pixies looks like this:

  • Weezer - Velouria
  • Superdrag - Wave Of Mutilation
  • Nada Surf - Where Is My Mind?
  • Letters To Cleo - Debaser
  • Jimmy Eat World - Caribou
  • Getaway Cruiser - U-Mass
  • Far - Monkey Gone To Heaven
  • The Get Up Kids - Alec Eiffel
  • Samiam - Here Comes Your Man
  • Weston - La La Love You
  • Teen Heroes - Manta Ray
  • Braid - Hey
  • Siren Six - Holiday Song

HUTCHENCE SOLO ALBUM IN LEGAL LIMBO

Due to the ongoing legal debates over his estate, Michael Hutchence's solo album may take years to be released. The INXS singer, who took his own life last November, had recorded an entire album of cutting-edge material with the help of ex-Gang Of Four guitarist Andy Gill, Tim Simenon of Bomb The Bass and Danny Saber (Black Grape). The album was due to be released this year, but since Hutchence's death and the subsequent wrangling over his holdings, the record has no decisive release date. Gill and Hutchence co-wrote as many as sixteen songs together over two years, with Gill and Danny Saber sharing production duties. Gill has described the material as experimental, and a step beyond the familiar INXS sound that rocked the world for two decades. Gill also marvelled at the Aussie's tireless work ethic, and called him "very imaginative". Tim Simenon, who most recently engineered (and produced) Depeche Mode's impressive comeback album Ultra, was working with Hutchence apart from Gill and Saber. A hint of what their collaborations might sound like can be found on the Batman Forever OST in the form of Hutchence's trip-hop take on Iggy Pop's "The Passenger". D.A.M.N. will follow this story, as well as the continuing career of INXS - - they reportedly have more than 80 unreleased songs in the archives that could see the light of day well before Mike's record.
