TODAY'S TOP 4 HEADLINES:
Big, BIG news for I Mother Earth fans today, as the band have officially signed a recording contract with Mercury Records. IME parted ways with their original home, EMI Music Canada shortly after their singer Edwin announced he was leaving the group. Now, I Mother Earth have a new vocalist (Brian Byrne), a new contract and a new team working hard for them. IME will be playing a few live shows as part of Summersault '98, then will head into the studio to work on their first album for Mercury (home of Zuckerbaby). As far as producers go, the band are throwing around names right now, including Paul Northfield, who was at the helm for 1996's Scenery And Fish. Don't expect to see any new product before spring 1999, but if you can't wait, check out the "One More Astronaut" remix as found on Chart's Humungous Canadian Bands Database!
Lilith Fair participants the Wild Strawberries have lined up a special live performance this Friday when the travelling festival touches down in the nation's capitol. The Toronto band will be appearing at the Starbucks Coffee shop at 1124 Bank Street (Bank & Hopewell) Friday, August 14 for a 30 minute show beginning at noon. Those in attendance at the lunchtime concert will also have a chance to win tickets to the Ottawa show later that same day. Starbucks are one of the main sponsors of the Lilith Fair, and selected stores all across North America are hosting similar shows as Lilith crosses the continent. The caffeine empire also have an exclusive CD for sale in all outlets. 1998 Lilith Fair - A Starbucks Blend features various artists from the Lilith roster, and a percentage of the proceeds will be given to the YWCA in Canada.
For the second time this month, rapper ODB did not appear in a Virginia courthouse to face shoplifting charges. The first absence was due to a performance conflict, and resulted in a bench warrant for ODB's arrest. This time, The Associated Press report that it was the weather in New York that prevented Russell Tyrone Jones (the Wu-Tang Clansman's real name) from showing up, as his flight was grounded. The presiding judge was notifies of the defendant's plight, and has rescheduled the case for tomorrow. Sheesh, all this trouble over a pair of running shoes (you'll recall that ODB, who prefers to be called Big Baby Jesus these days), allegedly walked out of a Virginia Beach retail outlet without paying for the new Nikes on his feet.
Our Vancouver correspondent Sarah G. called in this morning with a hilarious bit of gossip...it seems that Ms. Courtney Love, leader of the ultra-alt.rock band Hole, is a member of the Spice Girls appreciation society. Sarah reports that Courtney made a quick call yesterday to someone at Virgin Music Canada's west coast offices, looking to score tickets to last night's sold out performance by the Brit sensations. Rumours are swirling that Hole's new album Celebrity Skin is less agressive than past efforts Pretty On The Inside and Live Through This; maybe the once-raunchy Love has been taking notes from the pop tarts on a kindler, gentler form of Girl Power? In other Hole news, Courtney has slapped a gag order on British journalists that specifically bans them from mentioning her late husband Kurt Cobain, her father, the recent Kurt And Courtney film, drug use, and more. Essentially, all you CAN talk about is the new Hole album. Where's the fun in that?
